Uwchlan Ambulance Corps sponsors Dying for a Ride, a program for young drivers that deals with the dangers and consequences of distracted driving. This program is offered free of charge to area schools and community groups.
On the night of July 26, 2008, Hannah Robb, a thirteen year old Lionville Middle School eighth grader, was killed by a drunken driver. Jay Garfinkel, the coordinator of the Dying for a Ride program, wanted to find a fitting way to honor the memory of Hannah and to remind all drivers of the tragedies that distracted driving can cause. An eighth grade poster contest was held at Lionville Middle School. The goal was to create a poster that would show the theme of Dying for a Ride while including some of Hannah's favorite pastimes. Prizes for the winning posters were donated by Theresa Tarquinio from ReMax Professional Realty.
The three winning posters have been converted to graphics displayed on a van that was donated to UAC by Marianne and Nick Sieko. Marianne, a former Lionville Elementary school teacher, said she wanted the van to be used in a positive way involving children and young adults.
Sign-A-Rama in Chester Springs donated their time and professional expertise to decorate the Van with the three winning posters. Firestone of Exton donated the wheels for the Van.
The Dying for a Ride Van will be seen on area roads and at local community events. Through Uwchlan Ambulance Corps, this Van will be used to strengthen community awareness of safe driving and to provide community education in Chester County.
